What does IDD mean?
IDD stands for Insurance Distribution Directive. According to the IDD policy, insurance brokers and advisors, as well as all employees involved in the distribution of insurance, must complete at least 15 hours of training per year. The training requirement is intended to ensure that professional and personal competencies are maintained.
Who is affected by the requirements of the Insurance Distribution Directive?
The obligation to undergo regular IDD continuing education affects all insurance intermediaries and their employees, insofar as they are active in customer consulting, contract administration and claims processing. Thus, everyone who advises on, concludes or brokers insurance contracts is obligated to a certain number of IDD points.
How must the education obligation be implemented in the context of the Insurance Distribution Directive?
It is largely up to the insurance brokers themselves to decide in which form the education hours are to be completed. Continuing education can take place in-house or through external training and even self-study with verifiable control of IDD hours and points. However, continuing education courses must meet certain minimum requirements in order to be credited as training time. In terms of content, they should be specifically related to insurance brokerage and consulting.
What needs to be considered for continuing education courses under IDD?
The continuing education of insurance advisors is subject to a verification requirement. According to a guideline, the documentation of IDD continuing education (e.g. IDD hours and points) must be kept on a permanent data medium for at least five years. The IHK carries out checks as the EU Commission reviews implementation in the member states.
